A few hours prior to my movie watching schedule, I saw this randomly on the newspaper. I didn't knew what it was or what it was about. I just remembered reading the bir about it being an Academy Award Nominee. So when I saw the schedule of our planed movie to be atleast an hour and a half away, I made the impulse decision to watch this one instead. The first few minutes I was confused, one of those times wherein you are desperately trying to understand a movie in your head. It wasn't towards the end when I was saying Awwwww and liked the movie.
The story was about a father and son set in New York circa 2001. Ultimately, the father was one of the victims of 9/11. The story basically revolves about a son coping at the loss of his father, in this case, the son was a genius (leaning towards crazy). I swear there were parts in this movie that I hated the kid and wanted him admitted in an institution to get it over with. But I guess it all made sense. The weird thing is, there are some parts that I see myself in the kid. Maybe that's the reason why I didn't hate him as much as I 'm supposed to.
On a daily basis, the kid would go out of the house to visit people, trying to connect them to his father. You see he found a blue vase in his father's closet with an envelope and a key inside it. The only clue he has was the name Black written on the outside of the envelope. So he pulled out phone books and individually visited everyone with the lats name Black in the hopes of finding a connection with his father. You see he wasn't ready to let go of him yet, so he wants to be able to atleast have that last connection with him.
My favorite part was when he was confronted with his mom. All along he (and us the audience) thought his mother didn't know what he was doing, visiting all those people. But she did. She said that she knew of his plan and visited all of them before he did to give them a warning of his coming. That really touched me.
Ultimately, it was a good movie. It's not the kind that I would watch on purpose if I knew what the story was about first hand, but it was a pleasant surprise. And I'm happy I was able to watch it.
